Collecting your vehicle from the airport

Once heading upwards along the east coast of the fjord, on route 1 towards Egilstadir, you'll be surrounded by breathtaking vistas - this will continue throughout your journey. A little past a lake (Ljosavatn) on your right, you'll reach the junction with route 85, turn right and head towards Myvatn. Stop at Godafoss to view one of the most breathtaking waterfalls in Iceland. After a short while you'll come to the T-junction with route 845 - turn left towards Husavik.

Now heading north, you need to take a right turn onto route 854, signposted Grenjadastadir/Laxarvirkjun and continue eastwards. The buildings/settlements are spaced out and their names are signposted in blue/white at the end of the drives. Carry on briefly, along the unsealed road and you should see a small sign on your right - Muli 1. Turn right and drive up the hill - the farmer here will hand over the keys to The Lava House (or in Icelandic - Staðarhraun - pronounced "sta-dar-harun"). Return to the main road, turn right back onto the 845 and continue travelling eastwards.

On your left, you will pass a turf house museum (Grenjadarstadur) and its quaint church (a visit is encouraged). Continue past several other settlements, including Stadarhol with its green, low timber chalets. Immediately after here, you'll find The Lava House, or as it is signposted from the road 'Staðarhraun' - the recognisable Arctic Experience/Discover the World logo is displayed underneath the Icelandic sign - just look out for our arctic tern.
