From Akureyri
As you fly into Akureryi, you'll be struck by the stunning location of Iceland's second city. The airport lies at the head of Eyjafjordur, with Akureryi itself, on the west coast.
On entering the airport terminal you'll find a small baggage claim area on your right and the yellow booths of the car rental companies straight ahead - ALP is clearly marked.
Please ensure you have your travel documents to hand, along with your passport and driving licence. After completing a short form, you'll be handed your keys and its off to the front of the airport building to collect your vehicle. The ALP reresentative will give you a briefing on the vehicle's controls and confirm you have a full tank of petrol - please ensure the tank is full when returning the vehicle.
As you leave the airport, turn right onto the main road and head into town - time to stock up on groceries and other essentials.
Once finished in town, head back towards the airport on the main road and take a left turn towards Egilstadir (route 1). There is a a large petrol station here (ideal for a final ';fill-up' should you be returning the vehicle to the airport at the end of your trip). You'll find yourself driving across a bridge at the head of the fjord (airport on your right). The road bears around to the left and continues upwards, with commanding views of the fjord on your left (and places to pull in for a photo stop).
