From Akureyri   •Collecting your vehicle from the airport

From Akureyri

As you leave Akureyri airport, we suggest that you turn right onto the main road and head into town, where you can stock up on groceries and any other essentials.

Once finished in town, head back towards the airport on the main road and take a left turn towards Egilsstadir (Road 1). There is a a large petrol station here (ideal for a final 'fill-up' should you be returning the vehicle to the airport at the end of your trip). You'll find yourself driving across a bridge at the head of the fjord (the airport is on your right). The road bears around to the left and continues upwards, with commanding views of the fjord on your left (and places to pull in for a photo stop).

Once heading upwards along the east coast of the fjord, on Road 1 towards Egilsstadir, you'll be surrounded by breathtaking vistas - this will continue throughout your journey. A little past a lake (Ljosavatn) on your right, you'll reach the junction with Road 85, turn right and continue on Road 1 heading towards Myvatn. Stop at Godafoss to view one of the most breathtaking waterfalls in Iceland. After a short while you'll come to the T-junction with Road 845 - turn left towards Husavik.

After 10 km and just beyond a lake on your right, turn right onto Road 854 towards Grenjadarstadur. Pass the church and turf farm museum on your left, then stop at the farm guesthouse of Stadarholl from where you can obtain the keys to the house (Bryndis Ivarsdottir at Gistithjonustan Stadarholi ehf. Tel: 464 3707). From Stadarholl turn left back onto Road 854. The Lava House (signposted Stadarhraun) is about 150 metres further on your left. The easily recognisable Arctic Experience/Discover the World logo is displayed underneath the Icelandic sign - just look out for our arctic tern.
